On 8th February 2006 Rotary Club Chandigarh
and the Rotaract Club Chandigarh organised a fund-raiser Concert in the city that
helped the Club great mileage in terms of its publicity and awareness, amongst the
people.
And now, the children below one years of age
or those which were underweight and could not be treated under the current arrangements,
the Club has entered into partnership with another reputed medical institute, Fortis
Hospital, to take care of such surgeries. Fortis provides free services while
the Club provides entire consummables and medicines. The first surgery was done
on 21st February 2006 on 7-month old Rahul.

Background
On 7th May 1998
PRIP Rtn. Raja Saboo presented the idea of a novel project to provide
corrective heart surgery to children upto the age of 20 years belonging to poor
strata of society, and also undertake their rehabilitation and education.
The project was named as Gift of Life’ .
The US$100,000 project was conceived
for a period of two years, to start with, to cover approximately 50 children.
The Rotary Foundation has provided a Matching Grant of US$ 50,000, while other partners

The cooperating organisation
in this project is The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research
(PGIMER), a premier medical institution having a well known center for Cardiovascular
and Thoracic Surgery.
The PGIMER offers
free surgery, and hospitalization costs.
Already four children have
received the Gift of Life since the inauguration of the project in May 1999.
In May 2004, 100
In May 2004, 100 congenital cardiac surgeries were completed by the
Club including children from Uganda, Nepal and Pakistan.

Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), and his team of
doctors and nurses for their free service and dedication.
The Club is also grateful to
Ann Babbi Harbhajan Singh, wife of Rtn. PP Harbhajan Singh, who has selflessly
and single handedly providing pre and post-operative care to the children admitted
for surgeries. She is truly the 'Nightingale of our Club'.
The Gift of Life Project has
been extended beyond borders when the Club's Rotary volunteers' team visited Uganda
and seeing the poor conditions there offered this project's benefit to children
in that country.
